When does roof moss start to grow and can it damage my roof?
Roof moss can start to grow on a brand new roof in as little as a year if the conditions are right. Moss not only looks bad, but can cause your roof shingles to lift up exposing the nails to the elements. Moss also attracts unwanted birds and other animals that use it as nesting materials by pecking at the roof material. This can cause holes in the roof which can lead to water damage inside the home.
How do I prevent moss growth on my roof?
Treat your roof with a moss detergent, Zinc Sulfate or Bleach, twice a year. Roof moss treatment does take time, but will keep the integrity of your roof material. Other methods which are not recommended are pressure washing, scraping or brushing. These methods may void your roof warranty and cause premature wear.
